How to Create Your Brand Statement
Apr 05, 2023Hello there,
On a scale of 1 to 10, how happy are you with your personal branding?
Are you looking to stand out in your field and make a lasting impression?
Is your personal branding communicating who you're?
Having a clear and consistent identity is essential to creating a strong personal brand that will help you achieve a strong and recognisable reputation that is unique to who you're. Your personal brand is essentially the way people perceive you and your distinctive characteristics, skills, and values. It's what sets you apart from others and helps you establish a reputation and a connection with people around you.
Here are some reasons why personal branding is so important:
1. Differentiates you from others.
An authentic personal brand is unique to you and what you stand for. It sets you apart from others and allows you to showcase your unique skills, experiences, and perspectives. Differentiating yourself from others makes you more likely to stand out in a crowded and competitive environment.
2. Builds trust and credibility.
Yes, I know... the word 'authenticity' may be a cliche and overused buzzword word (and I've used it twice for now), there are good reasons why you heard it a thousand times. Let's take a moment to understand 'authenticity' and why it is integral to a strong brand statement.
Authenticity is often associated with a sense of genuineness, originality, and uniqueness. It means having a deep understanding of oneself and one's identity, and being comfortable expressing oneself in an honest and open way.
Being authentic also involves a willingness to be vulnerable and to embrace imperfections, rather than trying to hide them or present a perfect image to others. Authentic people are not afraid to express their true thoughts and feelings, even if they may be unpopular or unconventional.
Now, I like to invite you to reflect and think of a situation when you perceive someone as inauthentic. What comes to your mind?
You may be thinking of a person who may not be honest, lacks sincerity, or acts inconsistently. Hence, you may question their motive or intent and not trust this person. There are negative consequences, and it is damaging to relationships. Therefore, authenticity is an important trait in building strong and healthy relationships, as it fosters trust and mutual respect. People around you will likely trust you when you're honest and transparent about who you are and what you stand for. Trust is crucial because it leads to credibility, essential for building a strong personal brand.
3. Creates meaningful connections.
An authentic personal brand allows you to connect with others on a deeper level. When you share your authentic self and story, you're more likely to attract like-minded individuals who resonate with your message. This can lead to more meaningful connections and opportunities that align with your values and goals.
4. Empowers you to be yourself, or rather the best version of yourself.
Finally, an authentic personal brand empowers you to be yourself and embrace your unique qualities. When you're authentic, you're more likely to enjoy the work you do, attract opportunities that align with your values and goals, and feel fulfilled in your career and personal life.
Other than authenticity, the other key ingredient in effective personal branding is credibility. At its core, personal branding is about establishing a clear and consistent image that reflects your values, personality, and expertise. Hence, here are some important factors to consider when designing your personal brand to achieve authenticity and credibility in how you can communicate who you're:
1. Align your personal brand to showcase your personal values.
In my previous blog post, '5 Steps to Discover Your Values', I discussed the importance of identifying your personal values and the steps to help you discover your values. Personal branding is all about building trust and authenticity, and this can be achieved when you embed your personal values into your branding. It's challenging to establish conviction and credibility if your personal brand doesn't reflect your personal values, which highlight your beliefs and what's important to you. When you align your personal values to your personal brand, you're more likely to create an authentic and trustworthy image that resonates with people around you.
2. Create a personal brand that communicates your personality.
Your personality is all about your characteristics and traits and establishing your personality effectively. Reflecting your personality in your personal brand will dictate how others perceive you, bearing in mind that your personality very often is also aligned with your values. Ultimately, having a strong personal brand that showcases your personality will reveal who you're. Are you sincere, competent, sophisticated, casual, caring, creative, lux... or?
3. Highlight your talents in personal branding.
You set yourself apart from the competition by showcasing your talents in your personal branding. It's about having the necessary skills and qualifications and highlighting what makes you unique. By showcasing your abilities, you demonstrate to others what you can bring to the table and how you can contribute to their goals. The key is to avoid talking about your success. Instead of discussing your success, identify the key factors that could help you communicate your expertise and strengths in the projects and collaboration works you have done in the past and highlight it by showcasing your strengths and attributes.
Now that we've set the foundations for your personal branding. We're ready to curate your authentic personal brand statement, and here are the steps:
Step 1: Define your unique value proposition.
Your unique value proposition (UVP) is what sets you apart from others in your industry. It is the combination of your skills, experiences, and personality that makes you unique. To define your UVP, ask yourself:
What are your core strengths?
What unique skills or talents do you possess?
What experiences have you had that have shaped who you are?
What is your personality like? What are your values and beliefs?
Step 2: Craft your brand statement.
Once you have defined your values and goals, identified your strengths and unique selling points, and understood your target audience, it's time to craft your personal brand statement. A personal brand statement should be concise, memorable, and authentic. It should summarise who you are, what you stand for, and what makes you unique. Here are some cues for you:
I believe that ....
My values are...
My qualities are...
Step 3: Refine your brand statement every few years.
Once you have crafted your personal brand statement, it's important to refine it every few years as our life experience, and lifestyle needs may change. Imagine this... your brand statement will likely be different when you first entered the workforce than when you become a parent. Simply because your value propositions are not the same during the different phases of your life. Hence, you've to evaluate and refine your brand statement every few years to ensure relevance to get the most out of your brand statement.
Step 4: Live your brand statement.
Consistency is key when it comes to living your brand statement. You need to consistently demonstrate the qualities and values that you have identified as part of your personal brand. This means showing up in the same way, whether you are at work, networking, or interacting with people in your personal life.
Next, design a living and work space that is aligned with your brand statement is a way to reflect your personal brand and create an environment that supports your values and goals. Colour and style can have a powerful impact on our moods and emotions. Choose colours, decorations and design elements that align with your brand statement and reflect your personality, values and vision.
Incorporate meaningful objects and decor and personalise your space. Look for decor and objects that have personal meaning or reflect your interests and values. This can include family photos, artwork, books, quotes, or other items that have special significance and reminds you of your personal branding.
Step 5: Create your stylish wardrobe that echoes your brand statement.
Creating a stylish wardrobe that echoes your brand statement is an important part of aligning your personal style with your personal brand. Think about your style persona and how you can encapsulate the essence of who you're in the way you dress.
Look for clothing that reflects your personality and values. For example, if you value sustainability, choose clothing made from eco-friendly materials and wear clothes made by brands that are focused on sustainability. If you have a bold personality, choose clothing with bold colours or patterns. If you value competence and productivity, you're likely to be a minimalist dressing and creating wardrobe capsules can help you get into your zone and live your values.
When you dress in a way that reflects your brand statement, you're presenting a consistent image to the world. This, once again, helps to reinforce your personal brand and makes it easier for others to understand who you are and what you stand for. When you feel like your outfit is aligned with your personal brand, it can give you a sense of confidence and empowerment. This can help you to feel more comfortable and authentic in your interactions with others.
